Saturday’s last game of the season against the Met Police wasn’t one for the faint hearted.
Twice during the game the BORO’ were staring relegation in the face and twice they came back to eventually grab a precious point to secure their premier league status.
If Gosport had won the game then they would have been safe without having to worry about other results, but in the end we were left sweating on the Basingstoke game with Hendon and Walton Casuals turning the screw with vital victories.
It was never going to be easy against the Met Police who were playing for home advantage in the promotion play offs, and Gosport needed a gutsy performance if they were to get anything from the game, and so it proved.
After going behind early in the first half, they equalised just before half time with a goal from Ryan Pennery that calmed the traveling BORO’ fans nerves, and encouraged those listening at home to the excellent commentary from Sam and the ever professional Jeremy.
Half time 1 - 1 .....with Basingstoke losing BORO’ were hanging onto safety at this point.
But that was all to change when the boys in blue scored again in the seventh minute of the 2nd half, a goal that could have relegated Gosport if it had stayed at 2 - 1 to the Met Police.
The boys could have folded under the pressure but cheered on by the traveling BORO’ fans they kept playing and pushing for an equaliser.
With Basingstoke pulling a goal back in their game, the afternoon was becoming unbearable.......but.....but....Gosport were still playing and pushing for a goal and Ibra was in the mood to make his presence count.
To the delight of every BORO’ fan the breakthrough came and Ibra Sekajja scored a goal that would turn out to be the goal that kept BORO’ up.
The afternoon turned out to be an exciting... thrilling afternoon of football for Gosport, but it’s one we could have done without.
Full time 2 - 2......BORO’ safe for another season.
