Bank Holiday horror for Boro'

Gosport will want to forget this Bank Holiday in a hurry as they were humiliated 8-0 by Basingstoke with former striker Ben Wright netting twice.

Gosport remain rooted to the bottom of the Evo-Stik Southern Division after conceding eight goals without reply against Hampshire rivals Basingstoke Town in a disastrous afternoon at Privett Park.

Terry Brown's Basingstoke were inspired by former Boro' striker Ben Wright who returned to Gosport, by his own admission, with a point to prove.

And how he made it. He put his hometown club ahead after just 72 seconds and set the tone for the afternoon as goals arrived at regular intervals against a Gosport side who again were masters of their downfall. Wright added another, a penalty but could have had a hatful.

Boro's poor defending was punished to its fullest extent with the low point being Ed Sanders' own goal. The result leaves Gosport with an awful lot of thinking and talking to do ahead of Saturday's FA Cup tie against Bridgwater Town.

Basingstoke made the best possible start to the game, going ahead after just 70 seconds with Wright coming back to haunt his previous employers. A good move down the right resulted in Wright nodding home a cross from Atkinson.

Gosport did their best to recover from the early setback but soon found their afternoon was to get a lot worse. A near comical mix up in defence between goalkeeper Cafer and McCarthy allowed Smart to score the easiest of tap ins.

Basingstoke continued to find ways around Gosport’s rearguard with a pair of chances falling to Wright who failed to make the most of them. Cafer did well to palm away a stinging effort from Jarvis.

Basingstoke won a penalty when Saidy brought down Smart, allowing Ben Wright a gift-wrapped opportunity to inflict further misery on his former club by lashing home the spot kick with five minutes until the break.

Within seconds of the re-start, Basingstoke had Gosport cut open again with a move down the left culminating in Kennedy driving a low ball in across the face of the area only for Cafer to react and end the threat. But Gosport were soon to fall further behind as Smart weaved his way through a static defence to fire home the fourth.

Alex Pike’s reaction was to immediately make an astonishing triple change throwing on Lis, Breed and Mitford for Saidy, Smith and Kimber but the onslaught continued as Jarvis hit the post minutes later.

Boro' finally had their first real opportunity of the game after 53 minutes. Mitford’s run took him clear of the visitors defence and his shot was deflected up onto the bar. Tyler Roach also tested McAdden with a low rasping shot as Gosport finally began to show some sign of recovery.

But there was to be further pain for Gosport as two Basingstoke substitutes combined to make it five. Artwell’s cross picked out McKnight, who side footed home at the far post.

Just when Pike thought his day couldn’t get any worse it did as Sanders put through his own net to make it six. A seventh, scored by Collier, sparked a mass exodus of home supporters making for the exits to enjoy the rest of the Bank Holiday sunshine elsewhere.

There was still time for McKnight to score his second and Basingstoke’s eighth in stoppage time to pile on the pain.
